The Sheraton Suites Cypress Creek is located in a commercial area of North Ft. Lauderdale that’s full of banks and corporate buildings, near I-95 and the Cypress Creek Road (NW 62nd St) exit. The hotel is an 8-story Pink Tropical/Mediterranean style building. I heard it was formerly an Embassy Suites, and it sure looks the part. Complimentary self-parking surrounds the building and there is pay valet service at the Porte Cochere. Inside the main entrance is the lobby, with seating areas on the right and the front desk on the left. The lobby is quite nice and decorated in a Tropical Design. Little palm trees, fountains and furnishings in light pinks and teals are all over the place. In most places this décor is gaudy, but they pull it off pretty well here. It’s all finished off with marble floors. Our check-in clerk was friendly and helpful and we were off to our suite quickly. They even got the crib up to our suite in advance, as I called in and requested an hour before from the highway (sometimes hotels give me flack about doing this). Immediately around the corner is a gift shop. A few steps from the front desk, the Lobby opens out into a large 8-story atrium. The atrium is filled with mature trees, ponds with coi and turtles, bridges and waterfalls. Only thing missing was the toucans! The kids loved it. There are two sets of glass elevators on both sides of the atrium. We took the ones closest to us. Exiting the elevator on the 3rd floor, we strolled down the corridor toward our suite. The sound of the waterfalls was really loud up here as all the halls run along the open atrium. But this was not disturbing as the water was a ‘white noise’. In fact, it was almost calming and helped to cover the sounds from the restaurant and bar below. We got to our suite. We opened the door to discover the Suite Parlor. It was of an average size with a small dining table with seating for 4, a floor TV console, a pull-out sofa, sitting chair and coffee table. Back in one corner there is a wet bar with a sink, large mirror, coffeemaker, refrigerator and microwave. Décor was a tropical contemporary that is starting to feel dated. Walls were painted a seafoam green and furnishings were solid, residential style but starting to wear pretty well. There were two windows facing back toward the corridor and atrium. Immediately beyond the parlor, through a white door led you to the Suite’s Bedroom. The door to the bathroom is on one side, but first we will go into the Bedroom. The Bedroom was painted in an atrocious aquamarine color. The king bed was absurdly high. I couldn’t see the point in it. I’ve stayed in some hotels where the beds were high on purpose, and they provide step stools. Common in fine Southern Hotels and B&B’s. But this hotel exuded nothing of Southern ambience, and this high bed did not fit the room at all. It made the ceiling appear too low, like sleeping in the top bunk. The opposite side of the room had a large armoire with a small TV, a credenza, a wardrobe with iron and board in it and a vanity with sink and mirror. There were lots of places to put away clothes. This would be good for long stays. Just beyond the bed there is a nice sliding glass door leading to a tiny balcony with a filtered suburban view. Furnishings were similar to that in the parlor, with the same dated feel and well worn. Everything appeared fairly clean, but my 8-month old daughter’s hands and knees were dirty after crawling around on the carpet. The hotel claims to have the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Bed, which I really enjoy and was looking forward to. However, this bed was not reminiscent of a Sweet Sleeper in anyway. There was no duvet, down comforter, bed skirt, high thread count sheets, 5 fluffy pillows, and the Signature Sweet Sleeper sham. What gives? My key card even advertised Sweet Sleepers. I decided to lay in the bed and check it out. The mattress was very comfortable, and the sheets acceptable. But the pillows were horrible. Flat and not supportive. Definitely not from a Sweet Sleeper. I wouldn’t let it go, though. I was pretty disappointed, since I was told that my room had a Sweet Sleeper at booking time. I carefully climbed out the bed (I had to be careful, because I forgot my parachute), and pulled back the bedding from the mattress. Sure enough, there was an orange tag that said Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Bed. So my conclusion is…they changed all the beds out to the Sweet Sleepers, but none of the bedding. I hope they rectify this soon, for the bedding is half the experience. Maybe they are in the mail? The bathroom is situated in the Bedroom near the door to the parlor. It is small, just barely fitting the tub, toilet and another vanity. However, this is common with suite hotels and the size of your room makes up for it just fine. The floor was a beige tile with dingy and broken grout. The sink had a nice marble slab vanity top and the lighting was bright. Fixtures were very dated. A plus though was the real hairdryer. The tub/shower combo unit was fairly clean and featured a multi-setting showerhead and Sheraton branded bath care products. Although I don’t know who makes them, they are very pleasant. The Air Conditioning was controlled by a thermostat on the wall in the Bedroom. It’s the type where you don’t set a specific temperature, but on a scale between Warm and Cool. But the A/C was very responsive and cooled down the room to my Sub-Arctic requirements quickly. The only on-property dining option is Ferguson’s Bar & Grill off the atrium. We didn’t dine there as we took our meals in the many good restaurants in the South Florida area. I recommend Chez Porky’s for Louisiana Style BBQ in nearby Pompano Beach. We did order up Room Service one morning. The food was good and of average room service price. It was great to have the dining room table in the parlor, as it worked well for this purpose. There is a fantastic outdoor heated pool. The water temperature was warm and relaxing, and the free form pool twisted through lush tropical landscaping. It is one of the highlights of this hotel. There were ample towels available that were nice and clean. Additionally there is a small fitness center directly adjacent with a limited selection of standard equipment. A note in general of one experience…All in all, the staff at the Sheraton Suites were nice and informative. However, I had one evening in our stay that was less than ideal. The hotel has guest laundry rooms on the 3rd, 5th and 7th floors. After our 2 week trip, we needed to do some laundry. Of course, I do not keep a roll of quarters with me. I went to the laundry room first to see if they had a change machine. They didn’t, but that’s not unusual. I went to the front desk clerk and asked for change for their laundry machines. He said he didn’t have any and I would have to go to the Bar. I walked over to the Bar and asked the bartender. He lectured me on why the desk clerk should not be sending anyone to him as he doesn’t have change. I asked the bartender if there was anywhere I could go to get change because I really needed to do laundry. He said he wasn’t familiar with the area and couldn’t help me. Sigh. I went back to the front desk and asked the clerk if there was anywhere nearby to get change in the evening. He said, “Nope.” I asked again to help him think…are there any car washes or 24 hour Laundromats nearby? His response…”uhh, I don’t think so.” I wouldn’t accept this response. I’m in a Metro Area of 4 Million People! I had to go out in my car at 10PM at night and drive around the Greater Fort Lauderdale area for an hour until I found an unsavory Laundromat to get change. That’s bad customer service. They should always have change available for guests to use their services, but in an instance where they cannot provide change, they should be able to direct me where to go. Sad, but it did not ruin our stay. Additionally, another shocker…the rooms have no internet access. This is almost unheard of anymore. Even a Best Western I stayed at on this trip had Broadband Internet access. Also our room keys were temperamental and would not work indiscriminately. But if we kept inserting them, approx. 1 out of every 4 times it would turn green. Yes, and yet another note…the Tri-Rail Commuter Train. The train goes by the hotel at all hours of the night, frequently blowing it’s whistle. This did not bother me at all. But if you are a light sleeper, make sure you request the side away from the tracks. In conclusion, the Sheraton Suites Cypress Creek is a pleasant hotel in a good business location, but the suites are screaming to be renovated. The public areas are already nice, so if they renovated the suites and finished refurbing the beds into complete Sweet Sleepers…I would stay here again. But next time I’ll bring change with me!
